Common Features of Fire Safety Signs and What They Mean

Ace Fire & Security • Jan 30, 2024

While fire safety regulations ensure safety signage is frequently seen, it might not be entirely obvious what each individual sign means. Read on to learn more about the features of fire safety signs.

The Colours

While the colour of a symbol may not seem important at first glance, the different colours of each sign do actually have a meaning. There are generally four different colours a sign might be, which are covered below.

●    Blue and white - this colour combination means the sign's text or symbol will tell you to undertake a specific action or adhere to certain rules.

●    Green - these signs will show helpful information that keeps you safe, such as a first aid point sign or arrows marking out an escape route.

●    Yellow - a yellow sign will warn you, highlighting hazardous materials or environments.

●    Red - this colour represents danger and shows safety equipment, such as fire alarms and extinguishers.

The Symbols

The symbols on a fire safety sign are just as important as the colour. These symbols will demonstrate the action to be taken, or what the sign is showing. For example, fire exit signage will have a symbol of a person running through an open door combined with an arrow to indicate the direction you should go. Another common symbol is the pressing of a button near a fire, which indicates setting off a fire alarm.

The Words

Not every sign has text written on it, so fire safety instructions are not always guaranteed. The words that do appear on safety signage, however, will be instructions that tell you what to do, or what the sign is indicating. This includes the words ‘fire action’ written above instructions of what to do in the event of a fire, for example.
